Youth Achievement - Brendan Callas

Brendan Callas Performing at the Olympic Winter Games

Brendan was born in Yellowknife, NWT. Surrounded by a musical family and a living room full of instruments, he has grown up to be a lover of all types of music and a multi-instrumentalist himself, playing the piano, accordion, trombone, guitar, and drums.

At age 23, Brendan has had the opportunity to play for former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, former Governor General Adrienne Clarkson as well as share the stage with artists such as Valdy, the Great Lake Swimmers, and Jill Barber. Throughout school, Brendan was involved in musicals and concert/jazz bands, leading to his position as 1st trombone with the Acadia University Jazz Band. At Acadia, where Brendan received his Bachelor of Kinesiology, he also played in a band called The Pile that made many popular appearances on campus.

Brendan has been a familiar face at many northern venues and festivals including the South Slave Friendship Festival, Folk on the Rocks, Snowking Winter Festival, and Old Town Ramble & Ride with his bands The Greasy Twigs and Giant Con. Giant Con, his most recent project, has taken Yellowknife by storm in 2009, playing shows almost every weekend and releasing a music video with COLLECTIVE9 in the fall. Brendan was also selected to represent the NWT with a collective of performers at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games which will be one of his most exhilarating and largest-scale performances to date.
